Whether you're starting a new lawn, filling raised beds, or regrading your yard, getting bulk topsoil delivered is the most practical way to handle any project over a cubic yard. But if you've never ordered bulk delivery before, the process can feel unclear. How much do you need? What type should you order? How does delivery actually work?
Here's everything you need to know about ordering topsoil delivery in Kitsap County β from the types of soil available to what happens when the truck shows up.
Types of Topsoil Available for Delivery
Not all topsoil is the same. The right product depends on what you're doing with it.
Screened Fill Dirt
The most basic option. Screened fill dirt has been run through a screen to remove rocks, roots, and debris, but it hasn't been amended with compost or other nutrients. Use it for grading, filling low spots, and leveling β anywhere plants won't be growing directly in it.
3-Way Topsoil Mix
The standard choice for most projects. 3-Way topsoil mix blends screened topsoil, compost, and sand. The compost adds nutrients and organic matter, while the sand improves drainage. It works well for new lawns, garden beds, and general landscaping.
4-Way Topsoil Mix
A step up from 3-Way. 4-Way topsoil mix adds a fourth component β typically additional compost or a different organic amendment β for even richer soil. Choose this for raised beds, vegetable gardens, and planting areas where soil quality directly affects your results.
Garden Mixes
For serious gardening, we carry specialized blends:
- Garden Mix with Fish Compost β Rich in nitrogen and micronutrients from fish-based compost. Excellent for vegetables and heavy feeders.
- Garden Mix with Mushroom Compost β Balanced, mild, and great for flowers, herbs, and general garden use.
- Flower Mix β Formulated specifically for flowering plants and ornamental beds.
Compost (as a soil amendment)
Sometimes you don't need new topsoil β you need to improve what you have. Spreading 2-3 inches of compost over existing soil and tilling it in can transform poor ground into productive planting soil. We carry several options:
- Organic Compost β All-purpose, made from diverse plant materials
- Fish Compost β High in nutrients, great for vegetable gardens
- Mushroom Compost β Mild and balanced, good for most applications
- Tagro β A locally produced biosolids-based compost from Tacoma
How Much Topsoil Do You Need?
Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard. Here are common project estimates:
| Project | Area | Depth | Yards Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lawn top-dressing | 1,000 sq ft | 1 inch | ~3 yards |
| New lawn installation | 1,000 sq ft | 4 inches | ~12 yards |
| Raised bed (4x8 ft) | 32 sq ft | 12 inches | ~1.2 yards |
| Garden bed renovation | 500 sq ft | 3 inches | ~4.5 yards |

Bulk Delivery vs. Bagged Topsoil
For any project requiring more than a cubic yard, bulk delivery wins on cost and convenience. Here's the reality:
- Bagged topsoil from a hardware store runs $100-$250 per cubic yard equivalent, plus you're loading, hauling, and spreading dozens of heavy bags yourself.
- Bulk delivery brings exactly what you need in a single trip. One dump truck load replaces 30-60 bags. It's less expensive per yard, and the driver places it where you need it.
The breakeven point is around 1 cubic yard. Above that, bulk delivery saves money and your back. For more detail on pricing, see our complete topsoil pricing guide.
How Bulk Topsoil Delivery Works
1. Choose your product and quantity
Call us or stop by the yard. We'll help you pick the right soil type for your project and confirm quantities. If you're unsure, we can estimate based on your project dimensions.
2. Schedule delivery
We deliver across Kitsap County β Port Orchard, Bremerton, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Gig Harbor, and surrounding areas. Delivery is typically available within a few days, sometimes same-day depending on schedule.
3. Prepare the drop site
You'll need a spot for the dump truck to access and unload. A driveway, street frontage, or open area works. A few things to keep in mind:
- Make sure the truck can get in and out (standard dump trucks need about 10 feet of width)
- Clear the drop area of vehicles, bins, and obstacles
- If you want the soil in your backyard, we may need gate access β let us know in advance
- Soil is dumped in a pile. Plan for roughly a 6-8 foot diameter pile per 3-4 yards
4. Delivery day
The driver will place the load where you've specified. The whole process takes about 15 minutes. From there, it's your project β spread it with a wheelbarrow and rake, or hire a landscaper to handle distribution.

Pickup Option
If you have a truck or trailer, you can always pick up topsoil directly from our Gig Harbor yard. We'll load your vehicle with a skid steer. Pickup is available during regular business hours β no appointment needed.
For smaller quantities (under half a yard), pickup is often the most practical option. Bring containers or a tarp for your truck bed.
Tips for Getting the Most From Your Topsoil
- Order slightly more than you calculate. It's better to have a small surplus than to come up short mid-project. Extra topsoil never goes to waste in a yard.
- Spread it within a week or two. Topsoil sitting in a pile for months can compact and develop drainage issues. Spread and grade it while it's fresh.
- Test your soil first if you're starting a new garden. A basic soil test tells you whether you need amendments beyond topsoil β and can save you money by avoiding products you don't need.
- Mix compost in for planting areas. Even quality topsoil benefits from additional organic matter when you're establishing new plants.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is the natural top layer of earth, screened for consistency. Garden soil (like our 3-Way or 4-Way mixes) is topsoil that's been blended with compost, sand, or other amendments to create a richer growing medium. For more detail, read our guide on compost vs. topsoil vs. garden soil.
How many yards fit in a pickup truck?
A standard full-size pickup truck bed holds about 1.5-2 cubic yards of topsoil. Keep in mind that a cubic yard of soil weighs roughly 2,000-2,500 pounds β check your truck's payload capacity before loading up. Our cubic yard calculator can help you plan.
Can you deliver on weekends?
Contact us for current delivery schedule availability. We try to be flexible, especially during the busy spring and summer seasons.
What if it rains on my delivery?
Welcome to Western Washington! Topsoil handles rain fine. In fact, slightly moist soil is easier to spread than bone-dry soil. If heavy rain is forecasted, you can cover the pile with a tarp, but it's usually not necessary for short-term storage.
