Building a patio, walkway, retaining wall, or outdoor living space in Gig Harbor? Harbor Soils supplies the bulk materials that go underneath and around your hardscape β€” the crushed rock base, paver sand, decorative stone, and gravel that make the difference between a project that lasts and one that shifts and sinks.

We deliver direct to your jobsite throughout Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, and Kitsap County. No minimum order. Call 253-857-5125 to get started.

Hardscape Base Materials

Every patio and walkway is only as good as what's underneath it. Cutting corners on base prep is the #1 reason hardscape projects fail in Western Washington.

Crushed Rock / Road Base

The foundation for any paver project. Crushed rock compacts to a firm, stable base that doesn't shift or sink.

Standard patio installation:

  • Excavate 6–8 inches below finish grade
  • 4–6 inches compacted crushed rock base
  • 1 inch of bedding sand
  • Pavers on top

For a 200 sq ft patio, you'll need approximately 4–5 cubic yards of crushed rock base. Use our material calculator for your specific dimensions.

Paver Base / Concrete Sand

The 1-inch bedding layer of sand that pavers sit on. Concrete sand (also called coarse sand or sharp sand) is the correct choice β€” it's angular, drains well, and compacts properly.

Don't use: Play sand, beach sand, or fine sand β€” these don't drain well and will allow pavers to shift over time.

Drain Rock / Gravel for French Drains

Gig Harbor properties often need drainage solutions built into hardscape projects β€” especially on sloped lots or near foundations. ΒΎ" drain rock in a perforated pipe system redirects water before it becomes a problem under your new patio.

Decorative Hardscape Stone

Once the base is right, the surface materials bring your project to life.

Flagstone

Natural irregular stone for a classic Pacific Northwest look. Flagstone works beautifully for:

  • Garden pathways
  • Stepping stone paths through lawn
  • Informal patio surfaces
  • Water feature surrounds

Can be set in sand (informal/natural look) or mortared for permanence.

River Rock and Decorative Stone

Smooth, rounded river rocks in sizes from 1" to 4"+ serve both functional and aesthetic purposes in hardscape:

  • Dry creek beds that manage drainage while looking intentional
  • Decorative borders around patios and retaining walls
  • Ground cover in areas where nothing grows
  • Japanese-garden style gravel gardens

Pea Gravel Patio Areas

Pea gravel is an increasingly popular low-maintenance patio surface β€” easier to install than pavers and far cheaper. For a pea gravel patio:

  • Excavate 4 inches
  • 2 inches of compacted crushed rock base
  • Install edging to contain gravel
  • 2 inches of pea gravel on top

Use our material calculator to figure out how much you need.

Retaining Wall Backfill

Building or repairing a retaining wall? The material behind the wall matters as much as the wall itself.

Proper retaining wall drainage:

  • 12-inch wide layer of drain rock directly behind the wall
  • Perforated pipe at the base of the drain rock layer
  • Crushed rock or quality topsoil as backfill behind that
  • Geotextile fabric to separate layers

Poor drainage behind retaining walls causes hydrostatic pressure β€” the #1 cause of wall failure. We carry drain rock, crushed rock, and topsoil for complete retaining wall projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sell pavers and paver blocks?

Harbor Soils specializes in bulk landscape materials β€” the base materials, sand, gravel, and decorative stone that go with paver projects. For the pavers themselves, check local masonry suppliers.

How deep should a crushed rock base be for a patio in Gig Harbor?

For Gig Harbor's climate and soil conditions, 4–6 inches of compacted crushed rock is standard for patios and walkways. Driveways need 6–8 inches.

What sand do I use under pavers?

Use concrete sand (coarse, angular sand) β€” not play sand or fine sand. We carry it in bulk.

Can you deliver to a backyard work area?

If truck access allows, yes. Let us know your site conditions when you call and we'll confirm.

Do you deliver to Gig Harbor on the same day?

Yes β€” same-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon. We also serve Port Orchard, Purdy, Silverdale, Bremerton, and surrounding areas.
