Pressure-Treated Pine (Budget-Friendly)

4 ft x 8 ft x 12 in deep is the most common size for a reason:

  • Easy to reach the center from either side (no walking on soil)
  • Fits standard 8-foot boards without cutting
  • 32 square feet is enough for a meaningful vegetable garden
  • Builds in a single afternoon

  • 4 x 4 x 12 in: small spaces, beginner-friendly, easier to fill

The Step-by-Step Build

Materials You Need (for a 4 x 8 x 12 bed)

  • 2 boards: 8 feet long (the long sides)
  • 2 boards: 4 feet long (the short sides)
  • 16 exterior-grade screws (3-inch deck screws work)
  • Power drill
  • Square or framing square
  • Level (optional but useful)

Step 1: Pick Your Spot

The site decides whether your bed will produce. Look for:

  • 6-8 hours of direct sun for vegetables (herbs and greens tolerate 4-6)
  • Level or gently sloped ground (you can shim minor slopes)
  • Close to a water source (hose reach matters more than you think in July)
  • Good natural drainage (avoid the base of slopes where water pools)

Avoid: full shade, under trees (root competition and falling debris), against north-facing walls (too shady), in low spots where water collects.

Step 2: Prepare the Ground

If there is grass or weeds, you have three options:

  1. Sheet mulch (easy): Lay cardboard or thick newspaper directly on the grass. It smothers the grass and decomposes into the soil. This is what we recommend for most homeowners.
  2. Sod removal (thorough): Cut and remove the top 3-4 inches of grass. Composts well. Takes longer but starts with a clean base.
  3. Build over grass (lazy but works): Just put the frame on the grass. The grass dies under the soil weight within a few weeks. Slightly more work weeding the bed edges later.

Step 3: Assemble the Frame

  1. Lay the four boards on the ground in a rectangle, oriented as they will sit
  2. Drill pilot holes at each corner (prevents the wood from splitting)
  3. Drive 3-4 screws through each corner connection
  4. Check for square: measure both diagonals. If they are equal, the frame is square.
  5. Check for level if you want, but minor unevenness is fine

Pro tip: do not over-tighten cedar. It splits easily. Drive screws snug, not death-gripped.

Step 4: Position the Frame

Move the assembled frame to your chosen spot. If the ground is uneven, slip flat stones or pressure-treated shims under the low corners until the frame sits flat. Total leveling is not necessary.

Step 5: Optional Weed Barrier

If you have a gopher or vole problem, line the bottom with 1/4-inch hardware cloth before filling. Otherwise, sheet-mulch cardboard from Step 2 is enough.

Never use solid plastic. It traps water and rots the soil from below.

Soak the bed thoroughly after filling. Soil will compact and settle 10-15 percent. Top up with another inch or two as needed. Let the bed settle for a week before planting, though you can plant immediately if you are running behind on the season.
