Topsoil Delivery in Gig Harbor — What You Need to Know
Ordering topsoil delivery in Gig Harbor doesn't have to be complicated — but there are a few things worth knowing before you place your first order. This guide covers what type of topsoil works best for Kitsap County projects, how much to order, and what to expect on delivery day.
What Is Topsoil (And What It Isn't)
Topsoil is the upper layer of native soil — the part that contains organic matter and supports plant life. But not all topsoil is the same. At Harbor Soils, our most popular product is the 3-Way Topsoil Mix: a blended combination of quality topsoil, compost, and soil amendments.
Here's how topsoil differs from similar products:
- Topsoil: The base growing medium. Good for general landscaping, lawn repair, and filling raised beds.
- Fill dirt: Inorganic, for grading and leveling. Not for planting.
- Compost: Nutrient-rich organic matter. Best mixed in rather than used alone.
- Garden mix: A richer blend designed for intensive vegetable growing.
If you're building raised beds, repairing your lawn, or starting a planting project, you want quality topsoil or a topsoil blend — not fill dirt.
How Much Topsoil Do You Need?
Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard. Here's a simple formula:
Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards
Example: A 10×10 raised bed, 8 inches deep = 10 × 10 × (8÷12) ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards
Quick reference for common projects:
- 4×8 raised bed, 12 inches deep: ~1.2 cubic yards
- Lawn repair over 500 sq ft at 3 inches deep: ~4.6 cubic yards
- New planting bed 10×20 at 4 inches deep: ~2.5 cubic yards
When in doubt, order 10% more than your calculation — it's easier to have a little leftover than to make a second trip. Leftover topsoil can always be used for garden amending or lawn repair.
Why Pacific Northwest Soil Is Different
Kitsap County's native soil is notoriously clay-heavy. Clay soil compacts easily, drains poorly, and is hard on plant roots. If you're working with native Gig Harbor soil in a raised bed or new planting area, you'll want to replace or significantly amend it with quality topsoil or a blended mix.
The Pacific Northwest's wet winters also mean drainage matters more here than in drier climates. A good topsoil blend — with compost and amendment for drainage — handles both the clay challenge and the PNW moisture load.
